Thomas Gordon Smith Architects completed a thorough renovation of St.
Joseph Catholic Church in Garrett, Indiana by designing a painting scheme,
a new elevator and enhancing the parish hall. We designed new liturgical
furnishings including an octagonal baptismal font large enough for baptism
by immersion. The font is raised on a stepped platform and has decorative
tiles including a hand painted Lamb of God medallion at the center.
Eight limestone columns support a canopy with inscriptions.
Across from the font, a confessional was designed as a miniature structure
within the church. It is built of mahogany with inscriptions in the
entablature. Functionally, the confessional interior is designed so
that the sacrament is received kneeling with a screen, sitting face-to-face,
and to accommodate a wheelchair either with the screen or face-to-face.
A new altar was built in mahogany and granite. The central panel of
its face has a gilded Lamb of God and additional inscriptions. Other
liturgical furnishings include an ambro, a cantor’s stand, a reliquary,
and a standard for the paschal candle.
